April was a month with little dividends coming in. The stock market started falling on the dot on the first trading day of May. Not sure if it is a self-fulfilling prophecy but the adage ‘sell in May and go away’ was pretty accurate this year.
For the local market, the retracement coincides with the increase in C19 community cases. Singapore has returned to Phase2 but this did not come as a surprise given the number imports cases we are receiving daily. The spotlight this week is on SPH CEO taking umbrage at a reporter, and no one pretty much care about the details of SPH’s restructuring. The bad publicity worsens the selloff in SPH stock but in the long term, it will be for the better of SPH.
As for the US market, Yellen suggested that interest rate will have to raise to cool the market which triggered a selloff. She did elaborate further later that day but it was too late. Don’t think the market has dipped significantly to enter yet so I will watch and see.
